Don't Ignore Swollen Feet!

Most people dismiss swollen feet as a side effect of a long flight or too much salt. But your body has its own way of "speaking." Sometimes, a swollen ankle is a quiet scream for help from your heart, kidneys, or liver.

In this educational guide, Dr. Rohit Agarwal, Interventional Radiologist at Medanta Lucknow, explains why painless swelling is often more dangerous than painful swelling, and which 5 diseases might be the hidden cause.

Normal Swelling vs. Dangerous Swelling

It's normal for your feet to swell slightly during pregnancy, after standing for 10 hours, or after a long bus journey. However, "Dangerous Swelling" usually has three characteristics:

1. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

The Sign: Swelling in only ONE leg, often with pain or redness.
This is a medical emergency. A blood clot in the deep veins of your leg can break loose and travel to your lungs, causing a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. If your left leg is significantly larger than your right, seek deep vein thrombosis treatment from a vascular specialist immediately.

2. Congestive Heart Failure

The Sign: Swelling in both legs combined with breathlessness.
When the heart is too weak to pump blood efficiently, fluid backs up into the lower extremities. If you find it hard to breathe while lying flat on your back, your leg swelling is likely linked to your heart health.

3. Chronic Kidney Disease

The Sign: Swelling in the legs and puffiness around the eyes.
Your kidneys filter waste and excess fluid. When they fail, salt and water remain in the body, leading to systemic edema. This is often accompanied by changes in urination patterns.

4. Liver Disease (Cirrhosis)

The Sign: Swelling in the legs and abdomen.
The liver produces a protein called albumin, which keeps fluid inside the blood vessels. When the liver is damaged, fluid "leaks" out into the surrounding tissues, especially in the legs and the belly (ascites).

5. Cellulitis & Sepsis

The Sign: Hot, red, and painful swelling.
A small cut on the foot can lead to a deep skin infection called cellulitis. If left untreated, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream (Sepsis), which is fatal. This is particularly dangerous for diabetic patients.

"Painless swelling is often the most dangerous because it doesn't force the patient to see a doctor until the organ damage is already advanced." — Dr. Rohit Agarwal

The 5-Second Test: Check at Home

Press your thumb against the bone of your lower leg (the shin) for 5 seconds. If a visible indentation or "pit" remains after you lift your thumb, you have Pitting Edema. This confirms fluid retention and requires a clinical evaluation.

If your swelling is linked to venous insufficiency, consult a varicose veins specialist in Lucknow for a non-surgical evaluation.
