Can Varicose Veins Be Treated Without Surgery?

Yes — Radiofrequency (RF) Ablation is now the modern standard for treating varicose veins. It requires no cuts, no stitches, and no general anaesthesia. The entire procedure is performed through a tiny needle puncture, and most patients walk out of the hospital the same day.

The Old Way vs The New Way

For decades, the only option for varicose veins was vein stripping surgery — a procedure that required spinal or general anaesthesia, a 5–10 cm incision in the groin, and another near the ankle. The diseased vein was physically pulled out of the leg using a metal wire. Patients faced significant post-operative pain, bruising, wound infections, and a recovery period of 2–4 weeks before returning to normal activity.

RF Ablation has replaced stripping in clinical guidelines worldwide. Instead of removing the vein, RF Ablation seals it shut from the inside using controlled radiofrequency energy — all through a single needle puncture smaller than 2 mm. There is no incision, no wound to heal, and no scar.

How RF Ablation Works

The procedure is straightforward and takes approximately 30 minutes:

  1. Ultrasound mapping: Dr. Rohit Agarwal uses Doppler ultrasound to map the diseased vein and identify all points of reflux (backward blood flow).
  2. Local anaesthesia: The skin around the vein is numbed with local anaesthetic — you remain awake and comfortable throughout.
  3. Needle puncture: A tiny needle is inserted into the vein below the knee under ultrasound guidance.
  4. Catheter insertion: A thin RF catheter is threaded through the needle and positioned inside the diseased vein.
  5. Tumescent anaesthesia: Dilute anaesthetic fluid is injected around the vein to protect surrounding tissue and compress the vein onto the catheter.
  6. Radiofrequency sealing: The catheter delivers controlled radiofrequency energy at 120 degrees Celsius, which heats the vein wall and causes it to collapse and seal shut permanently.
  7. Walk out: The catheter is removed, a small bandage is placed over the puncture site, and you walk out of the procedure room immediately.

Who Is a Candidate?

Most patients with symptomatic varicose veins are excellent candidates for RF Ablation. You are likely a candidate if:

RF Ablation is safe for patients with diabetes, hypertension, and other comorbidities. Age is rarely a barrier — Dr. Rohit has successfully treated patients from 18 to 85 years old.

What About Compression Stockings and Home Remedies?

Compression stockings, leg elevation, exercise, and herbal supplements are commonly recommended for varicose veins. While these measures can temporarily relieve symptoms — reducing swelling and discomfort — they cannot fix the underlying problem.

Varicose veins are caused by damaged one-way valves inside the veins. Once these valves fail, blood flows backward and pools in the leg. No stocking, cream, or supplement can repair a broken valve. The veins will continue to worsen over time, potentially leading to skin changes, pigmentation, and non-healing ulcers.

Compression stockings are an excellent supportive measure alongside definitive treatment — but they are not a substitute for it.
