7 Symptoms of a Growing Thyroid Nodule You Shouldn't Ignore
Most thyroid nodules are discovered incidentally during a scan done for another reason. But when a nodule grows, it makes itself known. Here are the seven symptoms that mean it is time to act.
1. A Visible or Palpable Lump in the Neck
A swelling at the base of the front of the neck — especially one that moves when you swallow — is the most obvious sign of a growing thyroid nodule. Even a small nodule can create a cosmetically significant bulge, particularly in women with a slim neck.
2. Difficulty Swallowing
A large nodule pressing against the oesophagus makes swallowing food or liquid feel like it gets "stuck" in the throat. Patients often describe a sensation of a lump in the throat even when not eating.
3. Shortness of Breath or Breathlessness When Lying Down
Nodules pressing on the trachea (windpipe) cause breathlessness, especially when lying flat. Some patients find they can only sleep comfortably with their head elevated.
4. Hoarseness or Voice Changes
Pressure on the recurrent laryngeal nerve — which runs very close to the thyroid — can cause hoarseness, voice fatigue, or a change in voice quality.
5. Neck Tightness or Pressure Sensation
A subjective feeling of pressure or tightness in the neck, even without an obvious external swelling, can indicate an enlarging nodule.
6. Rapid or Irregular Heartbeat, Weight Loss, Anxiety
A "hot" or toxic nodule produces excess thyroid hormone independently of the body's control system, causing hyperthyroidism. Symptoms include palpitations, unexplained weight loss, heat intolerance, sweating, tremor, and anxiety.
7. A Nodule That Has Grown on Serial Ultrasound
Even without symptoms, growth of more than 20% in volume (or 2mm in two dimensions) on follow-up ultrasound is a treatment indication. Growth is defined as the nodule asserting itself — and should be addressed.
