10 Early Signs of Varicose Veins You Should Never Ignore
Most people dismiss the early signs of varicose veins as tiredness or aging. But catching them early can mean a simple 30-minute procedure instead of dealing with ulcers, clots, and months of treatment later.
1. Visible Twisted or Bulging Veins
The most obvious sign — dark blue or purple veins that appear rope-like under the skin, usually on the back of the calf or inside of the leg. If you can see them clearly, the valves inside are already failing.
2. Legs That Feel Heavy by Evening
A dull, heavy, tired sensation in the legs — especially after standing for long periods — is one of the earliest and most common symptoms. Many people assume it is simply fatigue. It is actually caused by blood pooling in the damaged veins.
3. Ankle Swelling at the End of the Day
Mild swelling around the ankles that disappears overnight but returns each evening is a warning sign. It occurs because blood is not returning efficiently from the legs to the heart.
4. Itching Around the Veins
The skin overlying varicose veins often becomes itchy, particularly around the ankle and lower calf. This happens because the pooled blood causes inflammation in the surrounding tissue.
5. Night Cramps
Painful leg cramps that wake you at night, particularly in the calf muscles, are a very common complaint in patients with varicose veins. The poor venous circulation causes muscle irritability.
6. Restless Legs
An uncomfortable urge to move the legs at night — restless leg syndrome — has a documented association with varicose veins and venous insufficiency. Treating the veins often resolves this symptom.
7. Skin Discolouration Around the Ankle
A brownish or reddish discolouration of the skin around the ankle and lower leg — called lipodermatosclerosis — indicates long-standing venous disease. The skin is staining from iron deposits leaking out of chronically congested veins.
8. A Feeling of Throbbing or Burning
A burning or throbbing sensation along the course of a vein, especially after prolonged standing, is a sign that the vein is under significant pressure.
9. Spider Veins Appearing
Small clusters of red, blue, or purple spider veins on the thighs, calves, or ankles often indicate underlying venous insufficiency. They are frequently an early surface manifestation of deeper valve problems.
10. A Vein That Feels Hard or Tender
If a varicose vein suddenly becomes hard, warm, and painful to touch — this could indicate superficial thrombophlebitis (a blood clot in the surface vein). This needs prompt evaluation.
When to See a Doctor Immediately
Seek urgent care if a varicose vein bleeds (they can rupture from a minor bump), if you develop sudden severe swelling of the entire leg (possible DVT), or if a vein becomes acutely hard and painful.
